The
Kali Sarda River expedition
11 Days Programme The Valley of the Kali has always been a trading route up to Tibet. The Tibetans used to trek for 6 to 8 weeks down to India to trade their rather meagre wares for salt and one can see the Tibetan influence in this region. The Kali Sarda river for most of its length demarcates the western boundary between India and Nepal and the expedition down this river provides some classic Grade IV rafting thrills. Best Time : October through till April DAY 1 Arrive Leopard Beach Tented Camp Drive to Leopard Beach Tented Camp at Shivpuri in time for lunch. O/n in comfortable safari tents on a beach by the holy Ganges river. DAY 2 At Leopard Beach Warm-up rafting training session on the river after breakfast. Raft from a point above the camp back into the camp. After lunch expedition training session ie. flip training, throw bagging, swimming in rapids etc. DAY 3 Drive to Karnprayag Morning at leisure. After lunch depart for Karnprayag. Overnight at the government rest house - simple but clean accommodation. DAY 4 Drive to Didihat Leave very early for the long but rewarding drive to Didihat. This is mainly a beautiful mountain drive through spectacular scenery. Overnight either in a tented camp or in a local rest house. DAY 5 Drive to put in point Drive the short ride to Joljibi and set off on the Great Kali Sarda River Rafting Expedition. Overnight in tents on a beach by the river. DAY 6 On the river The river is mainly grade II with one grade III rapid. The river demarcates the border between India and Nepal. There are beautiful waterfalls high up on the rocky escarpments on both sides of the river. We stop and visit some villages enroute. DAY 7 On the river The river is relatively straight forward here. We set camp at Pancheshwar, a famous spot for Mahaseer fishing at the confluence of the Kali Sarda river with the Saryu. DAY 8 At Pancheshwar Rest Day. Overnight Camp at Pancheshwar beach. DAY 9 On the river The river picks up in intensity and we run two big grade III rapids. There are very few villages and an excellent forest cover. Overnight on a beach by the river. Day 10 On the river This is the best white water day of the trip. We run a number of big and bouncy rapids including a big grade IV rapid at the village of Chuka, where Jim Corbett shot the famous Chuka man eating tiger. We explore the forest area around Kaldhunga after lunch and raft for two hours through a gorge with exciting grade III rapids. Camp in a forest rest house near take out.
