Valley of Flowers Expedition
8 Days Programme The Valley of Flowers, in the Garhwal Himalayas was officially discovered in 1931 by Frank Smythe, a famous mountaineer and explorer. The Valley of Flowers is reputed to be an enchanting sight - `a land ablaze with a bewildering variety of flowers fluttering in the gentle intrermittent breeze which wafts their fragrance abroad, set amidst majestic snow clad mountains that stand in bold relief against the skyline'. Best time: July, August, September DAY 1 Drive to Rishikesh Drive to Rishikesh. Arrive hotel / Snow Leopard Mountain Camp. After lunch at leisure or a short sightseeing trip of the many temples, ashrams, yoga centres and bathing ghats of Rishikesh. Dinner around the campfire. Overnight in hotel / camp. DAY 2 Joshimath Drive to Joshimath (270 kms) on a mountainous road. This is a very scenic drive along the Ganga river and later by the Alaknanda river. Overnight at the Tourist Bungalow / hotel in Joshimath. DAY 3 Govindghat Drive to Govindghat at the confluence of the Laxman Ganga & Alaknanda rivers. Trek for 15 kms. through dense vegetation to Ghangaria, the base camp for the Valley of Flowers. Overnight in camp. DAY 4 Trek Trek to the Valley of Flowers, with a vast variety of flowers including the blue Poppy, pink Geraniums, blue and yellow Pansies to name a few. Afternoon trek back to the Ghangaria camp. Overnight in camp. DAY 5 Trek Trek to Hemkund Sahib- a famous and revered Sikh shrine. Hemkund is a bluish green lake flanked by snow covered peaks. The 5 km trek to Hemkund is a steep climb along the Laxman Ganga which emanates from Hemkund. Afternoon trek back to Ghangaria. Overnight in camp. DAY 6 Ghangaria A day at leisure for exploring the dense forest area around Ghangaria. DAY 7 Trek Trek back to Govindghat to board the coach back to Joshimath. Overnight at hotel. DAY 8 Drive to Leopard Beach Tented Camp / Rishikesh. It is possible to either board the overnight train for Delhi or spend a few days at Leopard Beach Tented Camp on the Ganges.
