Getting There

Getting to the Hemis High Altitude National Park is not an easy task. The closest point of civilization is the city of Leh. Leh is connected only by air and road transport. The most exciting way to get to Leh is in your own vehicle. This must definitely be a 4-wheel drive as some of the climbs to the mountain passes enroute are quite a handful. The journey is through some of the most spectacular scenery that can be seen anywhere and is unique because it seems to change every fifty kilometers or so without being repeated again.

If you are planning to drive up to Leh, it is preferable to come up in stages and makes stops at the enroute camps to acclimatize yourself to the increasing altitude. It is also advisable not to spend too much time at the mountain passes as due to their excessive altitude it can cause medical problems to some people because of the lack of oxygen. An example of this is the Taglang La, which is the second highest motorable pass in the world. The highest motorable pass, Khardung La, is located much closer to Leh and although being higher is much more accessible due to the better road conditions.

The nearest train connection is to Jammu, which is a long distance away and is not a very advisable option.

By road, Leh can be approached from two directions. The first being from the Manali side in Himachal via Keylong and the second being from Srinagar in Kashmir via Kargil.

Foreign tourist must check about the latest government regulations before setting out on this journey.
