While travelling around Ladakh, always be prepared to go many a mile before coming to the next decent eating place. Frankly speaking, the only place that has what most people would term as 'decent' eating places is Leh. It has a huge number of restaurants catering to almost every cuisine.

Across the rest of Ladakh, the eating facilities are extremely basic and are mostly small set ups catering to tourists visiting important destinations in the area. While traveling by road, keep a look out for medium size tents made from parachutes. These are mostly the only source of food in the area. On the Manali - Leh route small eating joints are located at Khoksar, Jispa, Darcha, Bharatpur City, Sarchu, Pang, Rumtse and Gya. These are all located many hours from each other. Do not expect to find anything in between.

Proper roadside restaurants exist only between Leh and popular tourist destinations

A favourite cuisine of visitors to the area is from the tibetan menu. Leh city also has many German Bakeries set up by locals, the favourite of most visitors being the one located at one end of the main shopping "mall road".

Some of the Indian Army camps one passes do have canteens catering to the tourist driving by. An example of this is the one at Rhumtse.
