When visiting Ladakh, it is necessary to keep one thing always in mind. Despite the incomparable beauty of the landscape, it is of utmost importance to respect it and understand how dangerous it can be. One false step can result in being stranded in some of the most desolate areas on this planet. It could be days before you would be found, if at all. The altitude, lack of oxygen and the change in pressure only amplify any physical problem. However, a few simple precautions can ensure you go back with only the most amazing and beautiful memories of this land of Lamas.

Always ensure someone knows of your plans. Especially if you are planning an excursion by yourself or in a small group.

Preferably always travel with someone who knows the area well. Guides are plenty to find. This is extremely important if you are planning on doing any treks.

If heading out of Leh, always carry some kind of food and water that can be rationed over a couple of days in case of an unforeseen emergency.

Always carry a jerry can for spare fuel if traveling to Leh by road. Four wheeler or two wheeler.

The ideal stuff to carry is dry fruit, which provides all the nourishment required and is yet light and occupies less space.

We do NOT advise that you only do things that are safe. This place brings out the adventurer in almost anyone. So we only advise that you do a thorough study of whatever it is that you are going to undertake and understand the risks involved before you take them on. This could include things like detailed route plannings, possible halts, mountain passes to be encountered, available medical and evacuation facilities, etc. Be prepared!

If travelling by road, ensure you are carrying enough spares for your vehicle. Carry a jerry can for extra fuel. Keep a check on the available fuel situation as there is only one fuel pump between Manali and Leh (over 450 km).

If you are not a citizen of India, make sure you find out about the documentation required. Specially if you are planning on driving up through the Spiti area. It is advisable to complete this in New Delhi itself, although there are locations along the route where these formalities can be completed.

All vehicles, including those driven by Indian citizens, have to register at specified army check posts along the route.

If you are driving up from the Kashmir side, which we do NOT advise at the present moment due to militant activities in the area, be sure to find out about the timings stipulated by the army for travel along the Srinagar-Kargil-Leh highway.

Always keep yourself well covered as the strong sun creates a false impression of a warm climate.

Carry anything you may need (specially any specific medicine used by you) if you are travelling in the area away from Leh city. Leh is the only proper town in Ladakh where you'll find almost anything you require.
