Although
Madumalai is an extremely scenic reserve with a good distribution of wildlife
in all areas, some of the places worth visiting during your tours into
it's interiors are mentioned below. Also, in Madumalai as with all reserves,
it is a matter of luck and chance, which governs the spotting of the more
rare species of wildlife. However, certain tips on the areas with higher
concentrations of specific species can prove helpful.
A large variety of birds can be spotted around the forest lodges themselves. This is specially true for song birds like Barbets, Mynahs, Parakeets and Cuckoos. Other than this, the highest concentrations of birds are close to all the water bodies and near the edges of the large clearings. Although Monitor Lizards can be spotted almost all over the park, the area in which you are most likely to spot them is in the northeastern corner of the park along the road to the Moyar Power house. Kargudi is an excellent wildlife spotting area and is the best place to visit to try and sight Leopards, Macaques and Langurs. Wild Boars are commonly visible all over the park but higher concentrations of them are found next to water bodies, where the soil is soft and they find it easier to dig up roots and other vegetation to feed on. Tigers are quite evenly spread out all over the park and sighting are unfortunately very rare due to the type of vegetation and forest cover. A unique kind of Sambar species, which are much darker and with smaller antlers than those in other reserves all over the country, can be found and seen in the Avarahalla area of the park. Other than these places with better chances of spotting specific animal species, the elephant camp in south-central area and the waterfalls in the north are places worth visiting. |
