Fauna Elephants, Tigers, Otters, Nilgiri Langurs, Common Langurs, Bonnet Macaques, Lion Tailed Macaque, Malabar Squirrel, Wild Boar, Sambar, Barking Deer, Mouse Deer, Nilgiri Tahr, Dhole, porcupines, Gaur and Sloth Bears. The best location for those interested in watching Gaur near water is the watchtower near Eddapaliyam. The maximum concentration of tigers and sloth bear is in the core area around the source of the lake Periyar. There is a rest house located called Thannikudi in this area but one requires special government permission to enter the region. The river Periyar also has a very healthy population of the mighty fish called Mahaseer. A lot of the animal population seems to have caught the contagious disease of wanting to fly from humans. Some very interesting and unique sightings possible in Periyar National Park are those of the Flying Snake, Flying Lizard, Flying Squirrel and the Flying Frog. The reptilian population of the park mainly consists of Pythons, King Cobras and a variety of other snake species and Dark Monitor Lizards. |
