Getting around the Park Mode of transport within the park consists of only boats or your own two legs. Vehicles can only go up to the main reservation and tourist complex. The boats cover a large area of the park during every outing and a 4-5 day trip to the park is quite sufficient for most people. For the more adventurous at heart, it is possible to try and arrange for a local guide to take along on a trek. The best area to trek to is the core area around the thannikudy Forest Rest House. This trek however, will require prior special government permission. It must be noted that the park authorities do not encourage trekking and if you are only interested in wildlife viewing, you are better off moving around in boats as the animals are more accustomed to them and do not shy away. It is advisable to take along some extra salt to rid yourself of the leeches that will cling onto your limbs during this trek. It is also advisable to keep a vary eye for snakes. It's only for someone specially looking for more adventure that all the extra effort, required in the organization of such a trek, is really worth making. It is also an excellent option to get to and view wildlife from watchtowers that are strategically located in excellent areas. There is one located close to each of the four Forest Rest Houses. |
