Internal travel within the park is only possible in vehicles. Jeeps are available from local operators and from the forest lodges. The charges for these jeeps are a little steep but as they can accommodate up to 6 people, the expenditure per head is not too bad on the wallet. Although, its advisable to restrict it to 4 people as a guide is a must along with the driver. They cost approximately a thousand rupees for a trip. It must be kept in mind that to avoid over crowding inside the park, as is seen in many other parks of the same state, only a restricted number of vehicles are allowed into the park at a given time. So it is advisable to reach the entrance a little before the actual time of opening. To see the beauty of jeep rides - click here

Another new mode of transport started by the park authorities for safaris into the jungle are open vehicles built on the chassis of midsize trucks called Canters. These accommodate around 25 visitors and are quite popular with budget travellers. These cost an individual between 100 - 150 rupees. The rates are mostly written next to the door of the vehicle. So don't get swindled more than once by the person making your bookings!

These however take a little away from the jungle experience as they are quite loud and you cannot always be assured of like-minded companions. Sightings however are not a problem from these vehicles due to the animals have become accustomed to seeing them around. During our own visit to Ranthambore, the only tiger sighting was from one of these vehicles.

The visit to the fort provides the only breakaway from mechanical transport. The walk up is an extremely pleasurable experience. Keeping a day aside just to explore the entire fort grounds, on foot, is advisable and highly recommended.
