The
main forest cover in the Sunderbans consists of estuarine mangrove forests
interspersed by swamp and littoral forests. The former of which, it is
the largest in the world. There is also mangrove scrub forest, salt water
mixed forest, brackish water mixed forest and alluvial grasslands. Due
to it's thick and abundant forest cover it has also been classified as
a world biosphere reserve. Some of the more commonly found plants and
trees in the park are Genwa, Dhundal, Passur, Garjan, Kankra and Goran.
The Goran trees form an almost impenetrable vegetation buffer, varying
in height from 2 -4 meters. The roots of this mangrove forest vegetation,
which stick out above the water level, give the park a truly picturesque
appearance.
