Here are some guidelines for those of you who are starting out to write an article. If you have never submitted an article to a newsletter or magazine before, relax! There's nothing to it. You don't have to be James Herriot to write articles for us. There are a couple of things I want to say about these Guidelines:

First, do take a couple of minutes to read through them. I have done my best to keep this document short and to the point. I think you will find it well worth your time.

This document is not set in stone. It can and will change as we grow and learn what works and what doesn't. If you have comments or questions about it, please fire them off to me. I'm eager to hear them.

Before we get down to the nitty-gritty, here are some pointers.

  1. Use an upbeat, friendly tone. Don't try to be stuffy or literary.
  2. Keep the article formatting simple. Please do not use Microsoft Word fields, headers, footers, page breaks or other fancy formatting in the article.
  3. Articles may be submitted in plain text or as formatted text in Microsoft Word, RTF, HTML or PDF format. We would prefer if you zipped the article prior to sending it by e-mail (You may use PKZIP, WINZIP or a similar utility.)
Article Structure

Articles consist of three parts: front matter, article text, and the author biography.

Front Matter

· Contact information. You must include the following: Your mailing address, phone number, fax number and e-mail address. Don't worry - none of this will be printed in the article except for your e-mail address.
· Title. At the beginning of the article, write a short active, descriptive title.
· Byline. On the next line, enter a byline (your name). (No need for "By".)
· Summary. Skip a line and enter a brief and informative summary of the article. The Summary should be two to four sentences in length. This is the bait! Pull the reader in with details about what benefits they'll get from reading this exciting article!

Article Text

· Text. Indent your paragraphs. Don't use double spaces after periods. Please spell-check your article before submitting it.
· Subheadings. Use subheadings freely to break up your article and make it easier for the reader to find specific information. Don't indent the first paragraph in a new section.
· Figures. Include a reference for each figure in the text, like this: (See Figure 2.). Enter a short, descriptive caption after identifying where the figure goes. Like this:

The time has come, the Walrus said (see Figure 2).

*** wal001.bmp *** Figure 2. The Walrus

· Sidebars. Sidebars are an optional component that might contain references, definitions or other snippets. Note sidebars with **sidebar** in text. Insert the text **end sidebar** at the end.

· Bibliography. Include information about books in the following order

Authors Last name, Authors Initials (Year of Publication),Title, Publishers Name, Pages.

e.g.

Autori, I. L. (1992), The Economics of Conservation, Pelican Books, Pgs. 68-72.

Author Biography

Put your author biography at the end. Keep it brief.
